LOCAL Government Secretary Benjamin “Benhur” Abalos Jr. yesterday stressed the need for every local government unit (LGU) not to be lax in the fight against illegal drugs.

According to Abalos, the DILG will be conducting a yearly performance audit on the country’s local anti-drugs abuse council (ADACs) to ensure that their policies are aligned with the government’s approach.

“The war on drugs is everyone’s business. Hindi lamang ito laban ng DILG, ng Philippine National Police (PNP), o ng Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA). Ito ay laban nating lahat kaya dapat nating siguruhin na kasama natin ang mga pamahalaang lokal sa kampanyang ito,” he said.

Abalos said that the DILG will check the LU’s adherence to the drug campaign based on the criteria of organized local ADAC.

It would also conduct quarterly meetings and allocation of funds for the implementation of anti-drug activities indicated in the Peace and Order and Public Safety (POPS) plan and programs and extend support for ADACs in component LGUs and its innovation.

The DILG will oversee the performance audit to the 81 provincial ADACs, 146 city ADACs and 1,488 municipal ADACs in the whole country as they play a very important role in the whole-of-the-nation approach through the Buhay Ingatan, Droga’y Ayawan (BIDA) program.

Part of the ADAC’s mandate is to establish and enhance the Community-Based Drug Rehabilitation (CBDR) to help reform the persons who use drugs (PWUDS).
