THE city of Manila kicked off the onset of its Christmas celebration with the lighting of its giant Christmas tree at the Bonifacio Shrine beside the Manila City Hall and the groundbreaking of yet another open air promenade in Escolta which is hoped to become a “lovers’ lane.”

Mayor Isko Moreno led the groundbreaking of the new Plaza Yuchengco along Muelle del Banco National and thanked the Yuchengco Group of Companies led by its chair Helen Dee for shouldering the project.

Moreno and Vice Mayor Honey Lacuna spearheaded the lighting of the giant Christmas tree which signals the beginning of the Yuletide celebration in Manila.

The new promenade will cover a stretch of about 300 meters covering four streets -Yuchengco, Soda, Pinpin and Burke Streets from Jones Bridge to MacArthur Bridge.

Moreno thanked Dee for the help being extended to the city, noting that the yet to be constructed promenade will have a display of best flowering native trees, a main plaza with marker, 24 double lamp posts, concrete walkways with bike lanes, plant boxes and green spaces and benches, among others.

Dee expressed full support for Moreno and his governance, saying they plan to develop the area as a ‘lovers’ lane’ where couples may stroll and while the time away.
