IMMIGRATION Commissioner Norman Tansingco said the agency will be pursuing deportation charges against a Chinese man arrested for attempting to smuggle drugs at the airport.

Qian Qiang, 52, was intercepted after attempting to travel on board a China Southern flight to Guangzhou, China last August 10 at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3.

According to reports, Qian was intercepted by Office of the Transportation Security (OTS) personnel at the final security check upon noticing an object in the shape of ammunition inside his pair of shoes.

Inspectors then cut up the sole of his shoe and found two 22LR ammunition rounds and a plastic container containing more or less five grams of Methamphetamine Hydrochloride or shabu with an approximate street value of P34,000.

This led to OTS personnel coordinating with the NAIA Anti-Illegal Drugs Inter-Agency Task Group (AIDIATG) for Qian’s arrest.

BI records showed that Qian was a holder of a valid 9(G) visa, and was working for a Philippine-based company.

Violations of local laws, according to Tansingco, are sufficient grounds to cancel a foreign national’s visa.

Qian was arrested by the NAIA AIDIATG and will face cases in the local courts.
