Anti-drugs war

LIKE the elaborately-orchestrated campaign against smuggling, the anti-iilegal drugs war will be pursued not only in the metropolis but throughout the Philippines.

Not only that. The administration of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos Jr., which ends in 2028, is determined to recalibrate and intensify the campaign.

Before he assumed the presidency, Marcos said he intended to approach the anti-drugs war differently from the methods used by the previous government.

Note that various quarters, including human rights groups, described ex-former President Rodrigo R. Duterte’s total war against the “drug monster” as “bloody.”

The alleged extrajudiicial killings and human rights violations even caught the attention of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and other foreign organizations.

Aware of the alleged abuses during the past administration, the Philippine National Police (PNP) is seen to set policies on how the government will handle the problem.

In pursuing the war against the “drug monster,” the men and women in cop uniform will follow our laws, Press Secretary Trixie Cruz Angeles told a news briefing Thursday.

Angeles, a lawyer, said that PNP chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr., an Ilocano like President Marcos, assured that his officers and men “will be compliant with the law.”

Without doubt, Secretary Angeles’ statement is ample proof that the government of President Marcos is not forgoing the nationwide campaign against the drug menace.

And the Filipino, including the ordinary citizens across the country? They must support the gigantic undertaking if we are to slay the dreaded “drug monster.”
