Parking

A laudable move

PRESIDENT Marcos has rejected the proposed higher illegal parking fines in the heavily-populated Metropolitan Manila (MM) area.

As expected, the decision drew varied reactions from the Filipino people, with motorists praising the Chief Executive from Ilocos Norte.

Others said the move may worsen the traffic congestion in the National Capital Region (NCR), particularly during rush hours.

Through a video message, Marcos said he was against raising the fine from P1,000 to P4,000 as decreed by the Mtero Manila Council.

Admittedly, illegally parked motor vehicles cause monumental traffic jams in various parts of the metropolis and surrounding areas.

However, we share the view of President Marcos that Filipinos are capable of being disciplined motorists.

He stressed that he would encourage discipline over imposing stiffer fines on erring drivers.

Note that in many countries across the globe, “ang mga motorista ay mga disiplinado at marunong sumunod sa traffic rules and regulations.”

“Sa Pilipinas, kabilang na ang NCR, kung saan-saan na lang nagpa-park ang mga ibang motorista,” lamented an owner of a business establishment.

In rejecting the higher fines, Mr. Marcos said : “While I understand the intention behind the proposal, I’ve decided to prioritize discipline over penalties.”

We agree with President Marcos that by focusing on individual responsibility, we can create long lasting solutions to our traffic challenge.
