Yearender: Cavite rises above the challenges of COVID-19

TRECE MARTIRES CITY, Cavite – Every citizen in Cavite has felt the gradual economic recovery amid the pandemic caused by the coronavirus disease that hit the country.

From the lockdowns to the arrival of the first batch of COVID vaccine provided by the national government, the province’s economy returned to normal after more than 50 percent of Caviteños had been vaccinated as of December 2021.

In January this year, many of the rich cities and towns expressed their interest in procuring the COVID vaccine, including Bacoor, Dasmariñas, Imus, General Trias, Carmona, Tanza, Silang and Noveleta for their respective constituents.

In February, Cavite Gov. Juanito Victor “Jonvic” Remulla Jr. announced the cancellation of the Cavite International Airport project from its contractor while former Gov. Erineo “Ayong” Maliksi died at 82 due to COVID-induced disease.

Also in the same month, hundreds of Olive Ridley sea turtle hatchlings were released in Noveleta and Naic towns.

Another event that occurred in February was the preparation for the vaccination program, wherein each locality conducted a simulation program in their target jab sites.

In March, a leader of the militant Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) in Cavite province was shot dead. Manny Asuncion was gunned down in a purported raid on the Workers Assistance Center in Dasmariñas City. Asuncion, a well-known Bayan leader in Cavite, led the group for more than two decades.

Also in March, COVID-19 vaccine rollout began in Bacoor and Tagaytay City for A1 priority groups (health care workers.) Remulla ordered the closing of the Kaybiang Tunnel on March 17 while Imus opened its 1st drive-thru vaccination site in Robinson’s Place parking lot on March 19.

In April, Remulla, together with Cavite mayors, got jabs in De La Salle Animo Gym in Dasmariñas City. He announced the province would procure three million doses of Novavax.

In May, Remulla turned over speedboat and jet skis to the Philippine Coast Guard for additional patrol vessels that would guard the province’s waters.

In June, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency seized 795 million worth of shabu and destroyed 1.295 billion of illegal drugs in Trece Martires City.

In July, Cavite was submerged by a typhoon. It was also in July when 1,396 repatriated overseas Filipino workers got cash aid from the local government of General Trias.

Events that happened in the month of August include the resignation of General Mariano Alvarez (GMA) Mayor Walter Echavarria due to health reason, the mayor of Imus City was hospitalized due to Covid-19, Olympic Gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz got a brand new house and lot in Tagaytay as reward, and Imus LGU opened a vaccination site for economic frontliners,

It was also in August when COVID cases rose in Cavite and public hospitals declared full capacity.

In September, the mayor of Imus recovered from COVID -19 while the mayor ofTanza tested positive for the virus. It was also in September when some P1.5 billion worth of shabu was seized, and the Department of Public Works and Highways inaugurated the P2.2 billion Cavite reservoirs that is expected to help reduce flooding in low-lying areas along Imus and Bacoor rivers.

In October, Remulla led the filing of certificate of candidacy for May 9, 2022 elections and Noveleta LGU ground breaks Cavite State U- Noveleta annex. It was in October when the Inter-Agency Task Force downgraded Cavite province to Alert Level 3.

In November, the Department of Environment and Natural Resource and Philippine Coast Guard demolished illegal fish cages in Cavite City, vaccine rollout for minors starts, cholera outbreak declared in Tanza, Cavite has new provincial police director, and agaytay Mayor Agnes Tolentino withdrew her bid for Congress.

It was also last November when a vice mayoral candidate was shot dead, One died and 5 hurt in Cavite bridge accident, and Vice President Leni Robredo visited Cavite.

In December, Presidential aspirant Sen. Panfilo Lacson and running- mate Senate President Tito Sotto visited Cavite, Tagaytay City and Noveleta logged herd immunity, two Cavite schools conducted face-to-face classes, and Cavite provincial government relaunched “Linkod Kabitenyo” free wifi connection in three big cities (Bacoor, Imus, or Dasmariñas).

Also in Decmber, COVID cases in the province dropped, with only 125 active cases out of a total of 128,622 confirmed cases.
