WITH the expected onset of the “dry season,” the Department of Health (D0H) has reminded the public, including foreign tourists, to be wary of heat stroke and dehydration.

Health Undersectary Maria Rosario Vergeire, concurrently DOH spokesman, said the people, notably the elderly, should also watch out for the so-called “summer diseases.”

The “summer diseases” include ear and eye infections, like conjunctivitis, and diarrhea, which is caused by drinking unsafe water and spoiled food, said Undersectary Vergeire.

Vergeire said heat stroke and dehydration are two of the most common conditions during the summer months of March, April and May.

Fears about said diseases afflicting more people in the country were heightened when reports said that the public is awaiting the official start of the dry season.

It is during this period that health experts and education authorities expect these diseases and conditions – heat stroke and dehydration – to proliferate in the Philippines.

Dehydration, which is caused by excessive sweating and lack of body fluids, is common among the elderly, while heat stroke is a condition where the body overheats.

When going out, bring enough drinking water, wear light-colorted clothing and cover your head.

We share the view of various quarters, including tourists, that the arrival of the dry season in this poverty-stricken Asian nation must cause concern among parents.
