PRIME Water San Pedro and San Pedro Water District have recently conducted a 4.8- kilometer pipe laying activity, including well-drilling and replacement of old pipes to increase water pressure and address low water supply concerns in some areas of San Pedro, following their ‘Walk the Line’ activity last June and July.

“Walk the Line is an activity conducted by PrimeWater to detect pipeline leaks that affect our customer’s water flow and pressure. We do this to ensure that we respond to our customer’s concerns as much as we can,” says John Paul Pascual PrimeWater San Pedro Branch Manager.

The comprehensive leak detection activity gained significant data on water leaks in the piping system, with most of the discoveries found in Southern Heights 2 and 2-A. Forty-six (46) leaks in June and fifty-one (51) as of July 15 have been detected based on reports, according to Pascual.

Southern Heights 2, along with other areas in San Pedro, have been greatly affected by these concerns due to aging pipes in the area. Pascual underscores that pipeline leakages can be attributed to many factors, including theto include quality of materials used, location of pipes, and natural wear and tear, among others. Since the water district’s Joint Venture Agreement (JVA) with PrimeWater in 2014 , PrimeWater has worked hand-in-hand with San Pedro Water District to address the issues, working on long-term solutions to provide better water services as part of the JVA commitment.

An area’s elevation, such as in the case of Southern Heights 2, is also a major challenge, according to Pascual, because it would take an extra amount of pressure for the water to reach the location.

Wini Quitlong, PrimeWater San Pedro’s Technical Team Lead, said they have taken taken measures to address and solve the challenges in Southern Height’s area.

“We dug deeper wells in the lowlands, replaced old pipes, and connected them to booster stations so the water will reach its intended customers,” Quitlong said.

With the completion of their Phase 1 pipe laying replacement, Pascual said positive feedbacks have been received from Southern Heights 2 residents. “Sixty percent (60%) of Southern Heights 2 residents have already experienced the improvement of our service, that’s about 900 concessionaires of 1,500,” emphasizing its immediate effect. “We’ll be working on it tirelessly until we achieve that goal that water will be available round the clock in all our served areas,” he ended.
