THE Philippine National Police and the Department of Justice leaderships on Tuesday signed a memorandum of agreement aimed at providing more investigative training for members of the police force in order to further improve the PNP’s conviction rate specifically when it comes to cases of violation of Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulations Act of 2002, the Journal Group learned.

PNP chief General Rodolfo S. Azurin Jr. described the agreement he signed with DOJ Secretary Jesus Crispin ‘Boying’ C. Remulla Jr. as a significant move aimed at further enhancing the professionalism of the police organization.

The agreement paved the way for the allocation of a substantial amount of P300 million for the training and education of police officers.

“Training and education are essential to the development and formation of law enforcers, given the multi-faceted role of the police officer, as well as the latest technological advances which have reshaped the law enforcement environment,” Gen. Azurin said.

The substantial allotment for the training and education program of police officers was funded under Special Provision No. 11 of the General Appropriations Act of Fiscal Year 2023.

According to the top cop, with a P300 million budget, the PNP will be able to expand its education and training efforts to cover not only the fundamentals and special concerns but also the newest in digital innovations. This would result in more effective and efficient policing, as well as a higher level of professionalism among officers, he said.

“We are grateful to our lawmakers, the members of the Senate and the House of Representatives, who have made this special provision a reality,” Gen. Azurin said.

“We thank Secretary Remulla for his presence here today for our MOA signing. We are optimistic that from here on, we can fast-track our plans for more comprehensive and substantive training and education projects,” he added following the MOA signing.

The signing of the MOA between the DOJ and PNP marks a noteworthy achievement that is expected to have a profound impact on enhancing peace and order across the nation, said PNP Public Information Office chief, Colonel Redrico A. Maranan.

Through increased training and educational opportunities, the PNP leadership is confident that police officers can gain a deeper comprehension of their duties, responsibilities, and the laws and regulations they are entrusted to enforce, the official added.

Col. Maranan likewise affirmed the PNP’s commitment to collaborate with the DOJ in pursuing a more proficient and capable police force.
