PRESIDENT Marcos has underscored the need to uphold and protect the rights of media workers, citing their crucial role in the government’s information dissemination drive.

Of course, we cannot overemphasize the importance of the government intensifying the nationwide campaign to inform the public of its policies, programs and achievements.

In fact, Marcos said the press should help the administration in its efforts to step up its information dissemination drive.

The Chief Executive aired the call last Friday (November 25) after swearing in the newly-elected officials of the influential Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP).

It will be recalled that during the October 5 Manila Overseas Press Club’s “President’s Night” at Sofitel Philippine Plaza, Marcos pledged to put a premium on the welfare of mediamen.

He also expressed willingness to lend an ear and listen to the concerns of print and broadcast journalists.

We share the view of many that the administration of President Marcos is committed to uphold and protect the rights of members of the so-called “Fourth Estate.”

As President Marcos said, the press is a big help to the government’s information dissemination program.

Yes, even the Presidential Task Force on Media Security has expressed confidence that efforts of the government to safeguard press freedom would come to fruition.

What the government must do, we think, is to go after those who threaten mediamen who expose corruption and other shenanigans in government offices and agencies.
