Magnitude 6.6 quake hits Davao Occ
A STRONG magnitude 6.6 earthquake yesterday struck Sarangani Island in Davao Occidental.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the quake was recorded around 4:02 a.m. yesterday some 377 kms. southeast of Sarangani Island.
It was tectonic in origin or caused by the movement in the Earth’s crust and had a depth of 114 kms..
Intensity 2 was felt in the nearby municipalities of Glan and Kiamba in Sarangani province and Tupi in South Cotabato.
Intensity I was recorded in the town of Don Marcelino in Davao Occidental; Maitum and Malapatan in Sarangani province; and Koronadal City and General Santos City in South Cotabato.
Phivolcs said damage and aftershocks are not expected.
“It was a strong earthquake but it was far from us since its epicenter was located somewhere in Indonesia,” Phivolcs chief Teresito “Toto” Bacolcol said.
