Tess LardizabalMAINTAIN a deep connection with your roots. They remind us of who we are, where we come from, and the values that shape us.

These, among other nuggets of wisdom, were imparted by JCI Philippine-New York president to Jubert Paul Ong to Asian Americans during the Asian American Pacific Islander celebration last May 17, 2023 at the La Salle Academy-New York.

Ong — an alumnus of La Salle Academy Batch 2002 — was invited by the La Salle-Asian American Club to inspire the youth to foster a strong cultural spirituality and enduring love for heritage.

In his speech, Ong — reverently called JP by friends, family and peers — cited the urgent need for his young audience to “pass on our cultural heritage to future generations.”

“As Filipino Americans, we can teach others the language, share traditional recipes, and impart the values that define us. Our culture is not static; it evolves through our active participation and preservation. By instilling a sense of pride in our roots, we empower the next generation to embrace their heritage and become ambassadors of our cultural legacy,” he stressed.

The following is JP’s full speech:

“I stand before you today, humbled and honored, as a Filipino American, to speak about the importance of staying connected and rooted in our rich culture and heritage, despite growing up in the United States. Our journey as Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders has been one of resilience, determination, and strength. We have embraced the opportunities that this great nation has offered us while carrying the legacy of our ancestors within our hearts.

As we navigate the complexities of identity in a multicultural society, it is crucial for us to maintain a deep connection with our roots. Our culture and heritage are not mere ornaments to be displayed occasionally; they are the threads that weave together the tapestry of our existence. They remind us of who we are, where we come from, and the values that shape us.

So, how do we stay connected and rooted amidst the fast-paced world we find ourselves in? First and foremost, let us seek knowledge. Delve into the vast history, traditions, and stories of our Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. Learn about the sacrifices and struggles that our ancestors endured, and the triumphs they achieved. In doing so, we gain a profound understanding of our place in the world and the responsibility we carry to honor their legacy.

Secondly, let us celebrate our diversity. We are a tapestry of cultures, languages, religions, and traditions. Each one of us, with our unique backgrounds, contributes to the vibrant mosaic of Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage. Embrace this diversity and engage with the richness of our collective experiences. Participate in cultural festivals, connect with community organizations, and share your stories with others. In doing so, we forge bonds that transcend borders and create bridges of understanding.

Moreover, it is essential to pass on our cultural heritage to future generations. As Filipino Americans, we can teach others the language, share traditional recipes, and impart the values that define us. Our culture is not static; it evolves through our active participation and preservation. By instilling a sense of pride in our roots, we empower the next generation to embrace their heritage and become ambassadors of our cultural legacy.

Finally, let us be the shining examples of our culture. In our interactions with others, we can embody the values of respect, hospitality, and compassion that are deeply rooted in Asian and Pacific Islander traditions. We can break down stereotypes and misconceptions by being confident in our identities and sharing our unique perspectives. By living our truth and leading by example, we inspire others to appreciate and respect the diverse tapestry of cultures that make up the United States.

Today, as we gather here, let us reaffirm our commitment to staying connected and rooted in our culture and heritage. Let us embrace the strength of our communities, learn from our shared history, and celebrate our diversity. As Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, we are the torchbearers of a legacy that spans generations. Let us carry it forward with pride, honor, and a deep sense of gratitude for those who paved the way.

Thank you, and may our shared journey be one of inspiration, unity, and endless possibilities.”
