THE Commission on Human Rights is conducting an investigation into the death of a Grade 10 student due to alleged hazing in San Enrique, Negros Occidental.

Mark Lester Miranda, 18, of San Enrique town succumbed to internal bleeding after undergoing initiation rites by his fraternity.

CHR spokesperson Jacqueline Ann de Guia expressed alarm after learning of Miranda’s death.

De Guia said despite most of the learners being in online school, the Commission on Higher Education should have set measures on how to protect the students amid distance learning.

Miranda died last September 9 but the family reported the victim’s death to the police only last Saturday.

The family told police that they were able to talk to the victim before his death.

Miranda was recruited by the fraternity group on March 3 but the frat leaders backed out after learning he was still a minor.

On September 3, Miranda celebrated his 18th birthday.

The following day, frat members came to his house and recruited him again. He allegedly underwent hazing.

After the alleged initiation rites, the victim suffered fever and chills and was brought to the hospital, where he died.

Attending doctors said Miranda suffered hematomas and succumbed to internal bleeding.

Before Miranda died, he told his parents he was paddled.

A wooden paddle was recovered in the house of one of the suspects.

Neneng Miranda, mother of the victim, said they will not stop until they get justice for his son’s death.

Police have investigated three frat members that led to the death of Miranda.
