Ambushed Misamis mayor dies in hospital

POLICE in Tangub City, Misamis Occidental are tracking down the suspects in the shooting of three local political leaders on Wednesday last week as one of the victims died after fighting for his life for five days.

A report to Philippine National Police chief Gen. Dionardo Carlos said that members of the Misamis Occidental Police Provincial Office and the Police Regional Office 10 Regional Mobile Force Battalion have been sent to assist the local police in going after the suspects.

Carlos has instructed PRO10 director Brig. Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr. to fully supervise the ongoing effort of the Special Investigation Task Group created to probe the incident.

One of the victims identified as Mayor Michael Gutierrez of Lopez Jaena municipality died around noon Monday after being shot in the head. The victim was running for vice-governor of Misamis Occidental.

Gutierrez’ companions Misamis Occidental second district Rep. Henry Oaminal and former Oroquieta mayor Jason Almonte were wounded in a sniper attack that occurred during a Christmas party Sitio Pulao in Barangay VII, Tangub City in Tangub City.
