Vengeful win by Warriors

CASIEY Dongallo resumed her high scoring ways as University of the East avenged its first round loss to Adamson with a 26-24, 23-25, 25-18, 25-20 victory in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Not only the Lady Warriors ended a six-match losing skid in the season but earning their first win against the Lady Falcons since pulling off a 25-14, 25-19, 25-22 straight set romp on April 13, 2019.

UE improved to 2-6 overall, tying Ateneo and Adamson in fifth spot, still way behind Far Eastern University in the race for the last Final Four berth.

Finally tasted a victory for the first time since beating the Blue Eagles on opening day, the Lady Warriors are simply glad to finally get over the hump.

“The girls have been working nonstop, we’ve been working at it reviewing the team videos, strategizing, matching up, looking at possible lineups and pushing the girls really hard,” said UE interim coach Obet Vital.

Dongallo dominated late in the fourth set, scoring five straight points to pull away from a 19-19 tie to move the Lady Warriors to match point.

“Sobrang saya po kasi before the game started pa lang po, sinasabi na namin ni Doc (Vital) na we just have to play kung ano man yung laro namin, we have to give our all,” said Dongallo.

Ishie Lalongisip had 17 points and five receptions while Barbie Jamili and Adolfo added 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Lady Falcons, who have lost four in a row.

In the men’s division, FEU outlasted La Salle 16-25, 25-21, 34-32, 20-25, 15-8, to join holders NU on top of the standings at 7-1.

Dryx Saavedra and Martin Bugaoan took turns in the Tamaraws’ 8-2 start in the deciding set on their way to the hard-earned victory in two hours and 22 minutes, while sending the Green Spikers to a third loss in eight matches.

“Salamat sa La Salle na ganon yung ginawa nilang laban sa amin nakita namin kung hanggang saan yung capacity ng bawat isa sa amin,” said FEU coach Eddieson Orcullo.

Francis Casas had 21 points on 18-of-38 while Dan Gutierrez had 11 points, including the match-winning kill as Adamson forced a three-way tie with Ateneo and UST at 4-4 following a 25-17, 29-27, 25-22 sweep of UE.
