INCOMING Navotas City mayor-elect Congressman John Rey Tiangco assured local residents that they will benefit, in terms of employment, from the mega-project of the San Miguel Corporation (SMC) involving an integrated expressway leading to the new international airport in Bulacan, Bulacan.

Tiangco said the city council already passed an ordinance in anticipation of the mega project, directing all business establishments that would sprout in the area to hire or employ residents that would make up 70 percent of their workforce.

Earlier, Tiangco and his brother Mayor Toby Tiangco said some 343 hectares of fishponds are being reclaimed to give way for the construction of the megaproject, specifically the Tanza Airport Support Services, that will be built by SMC.

“The Navotas Coastal Development (NDC) and the Tanza Airport Support Services will bring diverse opportunities for Navoteños. To prepare for this, we passed the ordinance that require new businesses in Navotas to hire at least 70 percent of its workforce from bonafide residents of the city,” Mayor Toby Tiangco said.

The Tiangco brothers said the city government’s NavoTAAS Institute will also offer technical-vocational courses relevant to the needs of emerging industries.

The local officials said the SMC project will also feature the city’s largest socialized housing which will benefit about 3, 500 families.

“We thank San Miguel Corporation for their trust and confidence in bringing in this big project and acceding to our request to include our biggest in-city housing,” Cong. John Rey Tiangco said.

The local government will have a total of 7,167 housing units once the project is completed, they said.

The Navotas lawmaker said they have been planning and preparing for this multi-billion peso mega-project, which will be built with the city government spending no single centavo, for years now. By EDD REYES
