A 35-year-old electrician who invited his friends to a drinking session committed suicide by detonating a hand grenade he was holding, killing himself and injuring his three drinking buddies Saturday evening in Makati City.

John Al Javier, 35, of Blk, 348 Lot 9, Leek St. in Bgy. Pembo was declared dead on arrival at Ospital ng Makati while his neighbor Junnie Boy Duhay Lungsod Dizon, 36, was still in critical condition. Two other victims, identified as Jay Ardeño, 34, of Levy Mariano, in Bgy. Ususan, Taguig City, and Ronnie Mamayabay, 38, of Corn Flower St. in Bgy. Pembo were in stable condition.

In his report to Southern Police District (SPD) Director P/BGen. Kirby John Kraft, Makati police chief P/Col. Edward Cutiyog said the incident happened at around 9:50 p.m. near Javier’s residence while the victims were having a street drinking session.

Case investigator P/SSgt. John Robert Baligod said that prior to the incident, witness Miguel Cruz, 57, was in Javier’s house at around 3 p.m. when he heard the latter asked his wife to change her clothes before going to their neighbor to play tong-its.

After the victim’s left, Cruz and Javier started drinking. Cruz saw Javier grab a hand grenade and tuck it in his body.

At around 7 p.m., the victim asked Cruz to invite their friends who later joined them in their drinking session.

Apparently drunk already, Javier showed Cruz a grenade he was holding and asked him if he wanted to join him in committing suicide. Cruz got scared and excused himself to go home but he was followed by Javier convincing him join the suicide.

A minute later, Cruz heard a loud explosion.

Personnel of Makati Explosive and Ordnance Division (EOD) and Makati Forensic Unit recovered several pieces of metal shrapnel and fragmented body parts.
