CABANATUAN CITY – An incumbent barangay councilor or “kagawad” was shot dead by riding in tandem (RIT) suspects here on Monday night.

City police head Lt. Col. Carl Omar Fiel identified the slain barangay official as Ronald Castillo, 52, of Bgy. Magsaysay Sur, this city.

The victim was standing in front of the barangay hall at around 7:50 p.m. when two unidentified suspects arrived on a motorcycle and suddenly shot him repeatedly using a short firearm.

The kagawad was hit in different parts of the body and was rushed to the nearby Wesleyan Hospital for emergency treatment but was declared dead on arrival.

Meanwhile, the two suspects fled in the north direction after the shooting.

Fiel said they were only able to put up the dragnet operation against the fleeing suspects 25 minutes after the shooting was reported to the authorities at 8:15 p.m.

He said they are still investigating the motive behind the killing, which took place less than a month after the May 9 polls.
