A 20-YEAR-OLD construction worker died after being covered by collapsed piles of soil in the excavated drainage canal along the highway in District 2F, Bgy. Marauoy, Lipa City, Batangas last Sunday.

Lipa City Police Station Chief Lt. Col. Ronald P. Cayago identified the fatality as Jay Vincent Asada, single, a native of Bgy. Aroroy, Napunturan, Masbate and temporarily residing at Purok 3, Bgy. Bolbok, Lipa City.

A telephone call at 6:10 a.m. on June 5 was received by PSSg. Charles L. Zaraspe, Lipa City PS desk officer from the Command Center Lipa Rescue Team (LCDRRMO), reported a man was buried underground due to collapsed soil at a drainage canal being constructed.

Investigation showed that at about 3:00 a.m on the same date at Pookan, District 2F, the victim was seen digging and clearing soil using a shovel at the excavated portion, more or less four meters deep.

A huge portion of soil suddenly collapsed from the edge of the ground, which covered the victim’s location.

According to the witness and co-worker of the victim, the victim attempted to get up but could not do so and was covered by soil that caused his instantaneous death.

A team from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and Lipa Rescue Team (LRT) responded to recover the cadaver of the victim.
