SENATOR Francis “Tol’ Tolentino has voiced his backing for the proposal to revert to the old school calendar due to the soaring heat index.

Expressing concern over the prevailing heat conditions, Senator Tolentino asked Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Ricardo Solidum whether the current heat index trends would persist into the following year, emphasizing the need for calendar adjustments if the heat conditions endure.

Solidum said the continuity of the current Heat Index Temperature (HIT) into the following year is not yet confirmed. This uncertainty arises due to the impending transition to La Niña conditions. Transitioning to La Niña typically results in cooler temperatures, which may differ from the present situation.

Tolentino raised a query regarding the distinction between a heat wave and heat index. He advocated for the use of ‘heat wave’, citing its international recognition and prevalence among tourists.

Solidum clarified that heat waves are not commonly used in the Philippines due to our accustomed experience with high temperatures. While heat waves are recognized internationally, it typically involve 3-5 consecutive days of exceptionally high temperature.

Meanwhile, Tolentino underscored the importance of parental discretion in deciding whether students should attend school during periods of heat wave.
