LUCENA CITY — The remnants of communist guerillas formerly operating in Quezon province once again attempted to sow fear among residents of Quezon aimed at destroying the peace and order they are now enjoying.

In a last ditch effort to tarnish the good image of the now insurgency- free province, a band of communist guerillas of the CPP-NPA Sub- Regional Military Area (SRMA- 4B) under Southern Tagalog Regional Party Committee (STRPC) planted landmines wounding two Army soldiers.

Quezon police director Col. Ledon Monte said the incident happened while troops belonging to the Army’s 85th Infantry Battalion were patrolling along the boundaries of Bgy. Doña Aurora Calauag, Quezon and Sta. Elena, Camarines Norte.

Monte said the bomb exploded at around 6:30 p.m. on Monday.

Branding it as inhuman, Monte condemned the rebels for its continuous use of landmine which is strictly prohibited by the Geneva Convention Law or International Humanitarian Law.

Monte said the remnant rebels’ latest terroristic act was also a retaliation on the intense military operation being conducted by the 85th Infantry Battalion and the Quezon Provincial Mobile Force Company against the remaining communist guerillas attempting to recover their former territories in Southern Quezon and Marinduque.

Monte thanked the people of Quezon, the provincial government, the other local government units, and some national government agencies for their all-out support to the military and police in their anti-insurgency drive.

Quezon province was declared insurgency- free on June 12, 2023, coinciding with the country’s celebration of 125th Independence Day.
