Mind Power rules Torre Cup

MIND Power Chess team emerged as the overall champion in the first-ever GM Eugene Torre Cup senior rapid chess team championships at the Robinsons Townville in Imus, Cavite last March 26.

Bannered by IM Angelo Young, Roberto Biron and Gary Legaspi, Mind Power finished with five wins and one draw for 14 points in the six-round, one-day tournament organized by the Inter-Agrncy Chess Group (IACG) in cooperation with the Chess Education for Age-Group and Robinsons Townville.

With the win, Mind Power pocketed the top prize fo P20,000 and the perpetual trophy.

The RG Warriors of NM Edmundo Gatus, Dennis San Juan and Primitivo Virtudazo finished second with four wins and two draws for 13.5 points, while the Cavite Knights of IM Barlo Nadera, Eduardo Tunguia, Alfred Jumanan wound up third with three wins, two draws and one loss for 12 points.

The RG Warriors earned P10,000, while the Cavite Knights received P7,000.

Zugzwang Knights Kimurs of IM Chito Garma, Jerry Areque and Eugene Trasfiero came in fourth with three wins, one draws and two losses for 10 points. The team earned P5,000.

Tied for fifth to sixth places with three wins a nd three losses and 9.5 points were Team Balinas of GM Rogelio Antonio, Rodolfo Panopio Jr. and Ronnie Sebastian, and Magic Mandaluyong Tigers of Rolando Yutuc, Ricardo Jimenez and Raul Damuy.

Top individual players were Antonio (Team Balinas) on Board One; San Juan (RG Warriors), Board Two; Alfred Jumanan (Cavite Knights), Board Three.

Meanwhile, Garma crowned himself as the Individual blitz champion and brought home the top prize of P2,500.

Antonio finished second, while Young wound up third.The two received P1,250 and P850, respectively.

Jerry Areque and Freddie Casabuena finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Top Elementary — Kezia Ruth Libo-on of Abbey de St. Augustine.

Top High School 1st — Ariel Santander of Lyceum of the Philippines University

2nd — AFM Rai Enzo Batara of Mapua University.

Top College — Christian Thompson of Mapua University.
