LAND Transportation Office (LTO) Chief Assistant Secretary Atty. Vigor D. Mendoza II has ordered an investigation into a multiple motorcycle collision in Sta. Rosa City, Laguna last Sunday that resulted in one fatality.

Mendoza said his order is in line with the instruction of Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista to ensure the safety of all road users.

Based on the report, the road accident involved four motorcycles and a bicycle in Barangay Aplaya in Sta. Rosa City.

What prompted Mendoza to order the probe was why all the motorcycle riders involved didn’t have helmets at the time of the incident.

The four motorcycles were traversing F. Gomes St. when one of them accidentally bumped the motorcycle on his front. As a result, both of the motorcycles crashed.

A third motorcycle then ran over a back rider of one of the motorcycles that crashed and later hit a bicycle travelling on the opposite side of the road.

The bicycle was also hit by another motorcycle. The back rider that was run over by a motorcycle died at the Sta. Rosa Community Hospital.

While all the parties involved have already decided to settle the case amicably, Mendoza said the four motorcycle riders will not be spared from the investigation of the LTO, including the violation of the Republic Act 10054, which mandates the wearing of helmets of all motorcycle riders and back riders.

Mendoza urged all motorcycle riders to always wear helmets and other protective gear.

“Ginawa ang batas na ito para sa kaligtasan ng mga motorcycle riders at pati na rin ang kanilang angkas. Walang dahilan para hindi ito sundin dahil ang tinitiyak natin dito ang kaligtasan ng mga nagmo-motorsiklo,” he said.

Mendoza also urged all LTO enforcers to implement the mandatory wearing of helmets not only in Metro Manila and other urban areas, but also in all parts of the country.
