Good lessons

THERE are good lessons that can be learned from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic that continues “to worry” the poor who can barely provide for their daily needs.

For one, it is urgent on the government to wipe out graft and corruption in state offices and agencies because it needs money to meet the many needs of the suffering Filipino people.

The bureaucracy is still teeming with unscrupulous men and women, elective and appointive, who are out to make lots of Juan dela Cruz’s money at the expense of the public.

Note that since he assumed the top political post of the land at 12 noon on June 30, 2016, eradicating graft and corruptions has been a priority of hard-hitting President Duterte.

But admittedly, fighting wrongdoing in government offices and agencies is better said than done in this Third World Southeast Asian nation of election-crazy people.

Another very good lesson that can be picked up from the pandemic is the need for all sectors of Philippine society, including the ordinary citizens, to work in unison.

“Kung walang pagkakaisa ang taumbayan ay mahihirapan tayong makabangon sa ating pagkakalugmok,” according to a displaced overseas Filipino worker (OFW).

The migrant worker no longer wants to return abroad because she believes the government has a concrete plan of action to meet the employment needs of the people.

In her view, what is needed is for the government, through concerned offices and agencies, to transform the health crisis into an opportunity to come up with new programs.

And let’s implement these programs with the end in view of meeting the employment, medical, food and other needs of the burgeoning Philippine population.
