THE Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources is investigating what caused the fish kill that hit the Palico river in barangays Bungahan and San Diego in Lian, Batangas.

Dead tilapia, samaral and crabs were found floating on the river since Friday.

Residents said aside from the foul odor, they noticed that the river water turned black.

Mayor Joseph Pejie already issued an order banning swimming and fishing in the affected river and a part of the sea.

Residents suspected that chemicals from a factory dumped into the Palico river caused the fish kill.

The BFAR took a sample of water from the affected river for investigation as personnel from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Environmental Management Bureau are conducting an inspection of factories around the Palico river in Lian and Nasugbu towns to determine whoever was responsible for the unexpected death of a number of fish and crabs in the area.
