TWO separate fires hit residential houses and commercial establishments, killing a septuagenarian man and injuring his family member Sunday morning and late evening in Taguig and Parañaque Cities.

Taguig Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said the fire broke out at around 6:08 a.m. at the house of Conrado Garcia, 74, located at Barangay Bambang and quickly spread in adjacent houses mostly made up of light materials before it was declared fire out at 7:11 in the morning.

The old man died in the fire while his male family member suffered 2nd degree burn on his left hand and forehead.

The fire destroyed 15 houses and displaced 19 families composed of 83 individuals, while arson investigators estimated the damage to properties at P1.7 million more or less.

At around 11 p.m., a fire broke out at the warehouse of Consolidated Wood Products Inc. located in two and a half hectares lumber yard in Bgy. San Antonio Valley in Sucat, Parañaque City, forcing the Paranaque BFP to raise the fire to the 5th alarm.

District 3 Fire chief Senior Supt. Douglas Guiyab said a gasoline station and a condominium building were adjacent to the burning warehouse prompting them to raise the alarm to Task Force Bravo.

For more than nine hours, firefighters were having difficulty in battling the blaze due to variable wind blowing and insufficient water supply, although they had already contained the fire, and it was placed under control at around 8 a.m. on Monday.

Guiyab said no one was injured or died in a fire that destroyed an estimated P20 million worth of property while the arson investigators are still determining the cause of the blaze.
