FAR Eastern University and San Sebastian College hurdled their respective opponents to book their first wins in the 2023 Shakey’s Super League Collegiate Pre-Season Championship at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.

The Lady Tamaraws hacked out an easy 25-23, 25-14, 25-18 win over Mapua in only 77 minutes, while the Lady Stags came through with a 25-20, 21-25, 25-20, 25-12 win over Jose Rizal University. In an all-NCAA battle

Alyzza Devosora carried the fight for FEU with 18 points on 14 attacks and four aces while Gerzel Petallo added 10 points for the Manolo Refugia-mentored Lady Tamaraws.

“Una pa lang kaya medyo kinakabahan kasi first time na sumalang ulit. Sobrang happy din po kasi lahat kami, nag-ambag sa team,” said Devosora.

Katherine Santos, Zenith Deposoy and Christina Marasigan combined for the Lady Stags, who gave up only one set go their NCAA rivals

Santos shone with 20 points on 16 hits, two aces and two blocks, Deposoy Christina contributed 18 points and Marasifan had 13 points for San Sebastian.

“It’s a good start. Tsaka ‘yan makakalaban namin sa NCAA, atleast masusukat na namin yung kalaban although malayo pa marami pang pwede mangyari. Pwedeng mag-improve sila, pwedeng mag-improve kami. At least may psychological advantage na kami,” said assistant coach Clint Malazo on behalf of head coach Roger Gorayeb

JRU skidded to 0-2 in Pool A.

Earlier, University of Santo Tomas swept Letran, 25-21, 25-23, 25-14, for its second straight win.

Super rookie Angeline Poyos tallied 13 points on 11 attacks, an ace and a block in an 81-minute job for UST in the 16-team tournament supported by Mikasa, Eurotel, Victory Liner, Summit Bottle Water, Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken, R and B Milk Tea, Potato Corner, Rebel Sports, Converge ICT Solutions and Genius Sports.

UST’s win also spoiled the debut of new Letran coach Oliver Almadro.

“Hindi pa kami satisfied. Kailangan bigyan pa namin ng diin. Syempre, a win is a win pero ‘yung level ng nilalaro namin, kailangan itaas pa,” said UST coach Kungfu Reyes.

UST will next meet two-time NCAA champion College of St. Benilde.
