SSL National Invitationals runner-up Adamson University leaned on Antonette Adolfo, Lucille Almonte, Sharya Ancheta and Ayesha Juegos to turn back Arellano University, 25-19, 25-17, 25-22, in the Shakey’s Super League (SSL) Collegiate Pre-Season Championship Season 2 at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.

Adolfo led a balanced scoring attack with 13 points as the Lady Falcons of coach JP Yude hardly missed the absence of National Invitationals Best Setter Angelica Alcantara to sweep the Lady Chiefs in only 78 minutes.

Almonte added seven points while Ancheta and Juegos contributed six points each.

“Maganda naman ‘yung pinakita ng mga bata. Yung first setter namin ‘di nakalaro so sabi ko lang, kung sino lalaro ngayon (mag-step up). By God’s grace, maganda naman kasi ‘di naman nila tiningnan ‘yung uncertainty. Lumaban pa rin,” said Yude.

Laika Tudlasan finished with 10 points for Arellano, which debuted with a 25-16, 25-21, 25-21 victory of San Beda in the opener.

In other early results last Sunday, University of the East made short work of Jose Rizal University, 25-14, 25-21, 25-19, while Lyceum of the Philippines University outclassed San Beda, 25-6, 19-25, 26-24, 25-18, in an all-NCAA showdown.

Former California Academy standout Casiey Dongallo made her presence felt in the collegiate ranks by scoring 20 points — all on attacks — to spearhead the Lady Warriors’ sweep over the Lady Bombers.

Ashley Cañete and Riza Nogales added six points each as nine other players contributed to UE’s 74-minute demolition job over JRU in the 16-team event supported by Mikasa, Eurotel, Victory Liner, Summit Bottle Water, Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken, R and B Milk Tea, Potato Corner, Rebel Sports, Converge ICT Solutions and Genius Sports.

“First, I love the fact there’s an all-to-play rule to give opportunity to all players. We’re still trying to work on two separate line-ups for the first six on both sets. So far, I’m happy that both the line-ups executed well,” said deputy mentor Obet Vital, who spoke on behalf of head coach Jerry Yee.

“It’s a pretty good win but in the long run as the league gets going, we have to gel and have better chemistry. There were some slow spots in the three sets.”

Johna Dolorito and Janeth Tulang tallied 15 points apiece while Joan Doguna had 10 points as the Lady Pirates dispatched the winless Lady Red Spikers in one hour and 41 minutes.

No player finished in double figures once again for San Beda.
