Energy conservation

AWARE of the high-cost of electricity and the possible thinning of power supply in the coming months, the country’s consumers would do well to conserve energy.

In fact, a ranking official of the Department of Energy (DOE), Undersecretary Rowena Guevara, urged the people to make energy conservation “a way of life.”

We share the view of Undersecretary Guevara that Filipino consumers ought to make their share in demand-side management through energy efficiency and conservation.

And the top DOE executive was quick to underscore that the public should “not only (conserve energy) when there is thinning of power supply, but making it a way of life.”

At the same time, Guevara said the DOE’s power outlook for this year sees no red alerts for the Luzon grid despite the scheduled maintenance at Malampaya next month.

A red alert is declared when power reserves fall below the maintaining level of 4 percent of peak demand. When there’s red alert, rotational brownouts are expected.

The DOE official said, however, that the Luzon grid is expected to experience yellow alerts, with the most number of incidents of thinning of power supply in May.

“If we are operate diesel power plants at 420 MW, the number of yellow alerts go down to one from 12,” said Guevara.

But running diesel power plants is every expensive and will mean increase in cost per kilowatt hour.

That’s why, as well-meaning Filipinos, let’s all make energy conservation as a way life as recommended by Undersecretary Rowena Guevara.
