A RANKING official of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) is strongly recommending the installation of platform barriers for Metro Rail Transit (MRT) 3 for safety measures.

Transportation Assistant Secretary for Railways and MRT-3 Officer-in-Charge (OIC) Jorjette B. Aquino issued the pronouncement after the death of a 74-year-old woman passenger who jumped onto the tracks in Quezon Avenue Station Wednesday.

Aquino said the agency will “pursue” the recommendation as long as the budget allocation is enough.

“Kasama sa ating rekomendasyon ang [installation] ng sinasabing platform screen doors or yung mga barriers na nakikita niyo rin sa ibang bansa,” said Aquino.

In the meantime, station personnel and the security services will be instructed to implement strict measures to prevent the passengers from crossing the yellow line/marker in the platforms when the trains have not yet come to a full stop at the stations.

They will also continue to profile passengers on “out-of-normal movements.”
