SAN JOSE CITY — A COVID-19-infected police sergeant under confinement and isolation died after allegedly shooting himself accidentally while cleaning his firearm inside a government hospital here on Sunday.

City police head Lt. Col. Criselda De Guzman said the fatality was assigned at the Rizal municipal police station.

The cop, who tested positive for COVID-19 on October 8, was confined at the isolation room of the Ospital ng Lungsod ng San Jose when the incident occurred, said De Guzman.

The lawman was allegedly cleaning his cal.9mm pistol when it accidentally went off, killing him on the spot.

De Guzman said the cop’s wife immediately called out the attention of the duty nurse at the hospital after hearing a gunshot emanating from her husband’s room.

De Guzman said the cop was found dead with a gunshot wound in the head.
