A PHILIPPINE National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG)-led counter-terror operation in Basilan last Wednesday led to the killing of a suspected Abu Sayyaf Group member, PNP-CIDG director, Major General Romeo M. Caramat Jr. said Saturday.

The official identified the suspect as Buyong-Buyong Isnijal, an ASG bandit wanted for his involvement in the kidnapping of 20 tourists from Dos Palmas Resort in Puerto Princesa City in Palawan on May 27, 2001.

According to the official, members of the 9th Regional Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit spearheaded the operation in Barangay Caddayan in Akbar at around 12:55 a.m. Wednesday.

Caramat said that while approaching the target’s hideout, the lawmen were met with automatic gunfire from the target, thus prompting them to retaliate.

The suspect, who is a subject for murder, rape and kidnapping with serious illegal detention, was hit during the exchange of fire and died while being taken to the Lamitan District Hospital.
