Bay Area too strong for Blackwater

VISITING Bay Area Dragons opened its title campaign in style, blasting Blackwater Bossing, 133-87, in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.

Former NBA player Myles Blake Powell sizzled with a game-high 41 points on 14-of-28 shooting in 29 minutes for the Dragons, who led from start to finish in dealing the Bossing a terrible beating right on opening day.

Powell, who played for Philadelphia 76ers last year, also had eight rebounds, three assists and one steal.

Glen Robertson Yang added 22 points, seven assists and five rebounds on -of-12 shooting while Songwei Zhu and Kobey Ketavong Lam had 13 points each.

Hayden Joel Blankley also contributed with 11 points and six rebounds, who led by as many as 46 points in the lopsided contest.

Chuanxing Liu, Bay Area’s 7-5 center, had nine points and 13 rebounds for the Hong Kong-based Dragons, who are preparing for the East Asia Super League season.

Ato Ular led Blackwater’s losing effort with a double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds while import Cameron Krutwig added 11 points 12 rebounds and eight assists.

Rashawn McCarthy also had 11 points while Mike Ayonayon contributed 10 points for the Ariel Vanguardia-mentored Bossing, who played minus veteran JV Casio and newly-acquired Troy Rosario.

So impressive were the Dragons that they shot a high 55 percent from the field on 47-of-85 against the Bossing’s 34 percent (32-of-93).

The Dragons also fared better from the three-point area, 41 percent to 33 percent, and free throw line, 88 percent to 60 percent.

Both teams, however, have 52 rebounds each.

Bay Area wil next face NorthPort, while Blackwater will meet Phoenix Super LPG on Saturday.
