THE successor of President Duterte. who assumes the top political post of the land at 12 noon on June 30, would do well to appoint incorruptible new government officials.

Every agrees that graft and corruption in state offices and agencies, together with illegal drugs and criminality, still worry government authorities and the people.

In the view of many, including political observers, it is not enough that a prospective Cabinet official played a crucial role in the victory of the incoming administration.

What’s really important is the readiness of an appointee to work in unison with even political opponents, but who are willing to cooperate with members of the ruling party.

After yesterday’s presidential, congressional, regional and local elections, the setting aside of political and other differences should be welcomed by all sectors of Philippine society.

The next political exercise, which is an off-season election in 2025, is a good three years away.

“Kalimutan muna natin ang politika dahil malayo pa ang susunod na eleksyon at napakarami ang ating mga problema,” according to a leader of a losing local candidate.

That’s why there’s that urgent need for the losing candidates to help new government officials, led by the successor of Presidnt Duterte, as they address the nation’s problems.

Let’s not allow our many differences to hamper the socio-economic development of this poverty-stricken but natural resources-rich nation of English-speaking people.

Admittedly, the Philippines is small, poor and weak. So, in order for us to join the world’s fraternity of industrialized countries, we need to work together.

Of course, we share the view of many that the people have the right to determine whether the country rises or falls.
