TWO armed motorcycle thieves were killed in a gunbattle with pursuing operatives of the Philippine National Police (PNP) Highway Patrol Group (HPG) and the local police in Talavera, Nueva Ecija around 2:15 a.m. Friday, a report to PNP chief General Guillermo Lorenzo T. Eleazar said.

The two suspects who remained unidentified as of press time yielded two unlicensed firearms with several live ammunition, a hand grenade and a stolen motorbike following the firefight in Bgy. Homestead 2, Talavera, said PNP-HPG director Brigadier Gen. Alexander C. Tagum.

According to the official, the hot pursuit operation was conducted shortly after a resident of Bgy. Gulod in the same municipality identified as Renato Noble reported that his blue Rusi motorcycle was stolen while parked in front of his residence by the suspects around 9 p.m. Thursday.

Acting on the information, members of the Talavera Municipal Police Station led by Lieutenant Colonel Heryl Bruno and the Nueva Ecija Provincial Highway Patrol Team led by Major Lester Zafra conducted a dragnet and hot pursuit operation against the suspects.

Tagum said that officers intercepted the duo in Bgy. Homestead 2 where they ignored orders for them to stop before the back-rider fired shots at the lawmen triggering the clash.

Both suspects died on the spot.
