Welder shot dead in Navotas

A 41-YEAR-OLD welder was killed when a lone gunman shot him in the back of his head Wednesday afternoon in Navotas City.

The victim was identified as Richard Sabanal, of Bgy. San Jose, Navotas died on the spot from a single bullet wound in the head while the still unidentified gunman immediately fled, riding in a bicycle towards Brgy. San Roque.

Report reaching the office of Northern Police District (NPD) Director P/BGen. Ulysses Cruz said a witness and neighbor of the victim saw Sabanal being followed discreetly from behind by a man wearing a blue t-shirt, brown, maong shorts, and hat at around 4:15 p.m. while walking along M. Naval Street.

Upon reaching San Jose Catholic Church, the man pulled out an unknown caliber of a firearm, shot the victim in the back of his head at close range, and then fled immediately on board a Japanese bicycle.

When the incident reached the office of Navotas Police Chief P/Col. Dexter Ollaging, he instructed P/Lt. Greg Cueto, head of the Tactical Motorcycle Riding Unit (TMRU), P/Lt. Luis Rufo, Jr. of Station Drug Enforcement Unit (SDEU), and P/Lt. Juanito Arabejo, Jr. of Sub-Station 3, to conduct a dragnet operation and police checkpoint for possible arrest of the suspect.

Case investigator P/Cpl. Florencio Nalus said they are still conducting a follow-up investigation to determine the motive behind the killing.
