WORDS such as “thank you” and “please” were just among the many social rules and etiquette we should not ignore.

Part of good manners, we say, practicing social rules and etiquette would reflect a person’s behavior in social functions.

Here are some “unspoken” rules people sometimes forget:

* Never shake a hand sitting down.

* You can tell a great deal about a person by their handshake, so make yourself strong and firm.

* Never insult the cooking when you are the guest.

* Don’t take credit for work you didn’t do.

* Take blame, and give credit when due.

* Protect who is behind you, and respect who is beside you.

* Never eat the last piece of something you didn’t buy.

* Never make the first offer in a negotiation.

* Dress well no matter what the occasion.

* Listen, nod, and most of all make eye contact.

* Speak honestly. Say what you mean and mean what you say.

* Proper grammar will get you far in life. Leave the foul language for the less educated.

* Ask more than you answer.

* Show restraint in expressing anger, no matter what. Being angry is a waste of energy.

* If you are not invited, don’t ask to go.

* Don’t beg for a relationship.

* Whether it’s dinner, drinks, or both, avoid placing your phone on the dinner table.

* Always carry cash.

* Never pose with alcohol.

* Always aim for the head.
