TALAVERA, Nueva Ecija – The municipal government is initially tapping eight urban barangays to become part of its soon-to-be-launched “Sibuyas sa Paso” (Onions in the Pot) planting project in March here.

Mayor Nerito “JR” Santos Jr. described the upcoming project as a “timely approach” by the municipal government to help his constituents cope with the soaring market prices of onions.

“Dahil sa naging pagtaas ng presyo ng sibuyas, layunin ng proyekto na ito na magbigay kaalaman at maimulat ang kaisipan ng bawat isa sa kahalagahan ng pagtatanim na hindi kailangan ng malaking lupain dahil kahit sa paso ay mayroon silang maaaring anihin,” said Santos.

This onion planting project was revealed by Santos and Vice Mayor Nerivi Santos-Martinez during the onion seedlings planting activity held on Tuesday (January 10) in several greenhouses in Barangay San Pascual.

They were joined by all eight barangay heads from the urban barangays of Matias District, Pulong San Miguel, Maestrang Kikay, Pag-asa, Marcos, Poblacion Sur, Andal Aliño, and Esguerra, along with Municipal Agriculturist Flor Cuizon and Municipal Tourism officer Niña Agrave.

Santos-Martinez explained that it is also a part and continuation of her flagship program called “Gulayan sa Barangay, Paaralan at Bakuran project,” which she previously started in 2013 during her three-term stint as the town’s chief executive before her brother’s term.

“Uunahin natin ang sibuyas kasi napakamahal ng sibuyas ngayon, ginto ang presyo. Ipupunla natin itong mga seedlings dito sa ating greenhouse and then after a month ililipat sa mga paso at ibibigay natin sa walong pilot urban barangays natin,” said the vice mayor.

“Itong pagtatanim ng sibuyas sa paso ay puwede ding maging year-round kahit panahon ng tag-ulan,” added former mayor-now-turned municipal administrator Nerito L. Santos Sr., father of the Santos siblings.

The target date for the launching of the Sibuyas sa Paso project is on March 3, with the month of April being set for the project’s evaluation period in time for the awarding of the winners during the celebration of “Linggo ng Magsasaka” this May 2023, it was learned.
