HOUSE leaders yesterday rallied in support of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., refuting insinuations about his foreign travels by asserting that he is being unfairly criticized for diligently fulfilling his duties for the nation.

During a press conference at the House of Representatives, House Deputy Majority Leader Iloilo Rep. Janette Garin and Anakalusugan Party-list Rep. Ray Reyes said President Marcos is merely doing his job by actively working to strengthen diplomatic ties and attract foreign investments, which will bring long-term benefits to the country.

Garin justified the necessity of such foreign visits, citing globalization as the driving force behind them.

“Ang globalization ngayon is not a desire. It’s already a need,” Garin said, underscoring the imperative for countries like the Philippines to establish and nurture relationships with their global counterparts.

“If you don’t liaise and talk to other countries, if you don’t partner and foster relationship with other countries, mas lalo kang maiiwan,” Garin said, warning of the consequences of isolation.

She was reacting to a recent comment by former President Rodrigo Duterte, who alleged that President Marcos was merely gallivanting or indulging in leisurely travels during his trips abroad.

“I believe maybe it was a joke out of the former President’s mouth or if he was serious maybe it’s a political statement. I think politics should be left behind for the moment,” Garin said, citing the need to address post-pandemic challenges and prioritize the nation’s welfare above political discourse.

Garin urged for a balance perspective, acknowledging the challenges faced by those in leadership roles.

For his part, Reyes hailed President Marcos as the country’s “chief salesman,” stressing the pivotal role he plays as the Philippine representative on the global stage.

Reyes emphasized the importance of showcasing the country’s readiness to engage and coordinate with neighboring nations, extending even to countries as distant as Germany.

“Our President serves as our chief salesman. He is the face of the country and should demonstrate that we are ready to engage and coordinate with our other countries,” Reyes said.

Reyes highlighted the need for unwavering support for President Marcos, especially in ensuring that the country’s infrastructure and legislation align effectively with his representation of the Philippines.
