Old school calendar

THE intense heat terrorizing the people, particularly schoolnchildren, has thrust out front the need to return to the old school calendar.

Before the paralyzing two-year coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, the country’s school year (SY) opened in June and ended in March.

Today, despite the extreme heat, there are still classes in public and private educational institutions because the school year ends May 29.

But the return to the old school calendar may happen sooner because President Marcos himself favors it amid the worsening of climate change. \

The Chief Executive said “our main problem now is how climate change has altered the seasons, such that we did not expect that (the heat) would be like this.”

Note that several organizations have urged the government, through the Department of Education, to immediately revert back to the old academic calendar.

The sweltering heat has forced school administrators and local government authorities to suspend classes in some parts of the Philippines.

These schools switched to alternative delivery modes (ADMs), like online learning instead of face-to-face (F2F) classes.

Likewise, there are also the local outbreaks of pertussis or whooping cough in some parts of the country.

That’s why we also support the suspension of F2F classes in public and private schools.

Iwas na sa sakit at iwas pa sa heat stroke ang mga bata at guro.
