New COVID variants

THE Department of Health (DOH) has called on the people to wear facemasks, especially when they go to public or enclosed spaces.

And as a health-conscious Filipino, we doff our hat to an infectious disease expert, for urging the public to heed the timely call of the DOH.

The expert is Dr. Rontgene Solante, head of the Philippine College of Physicians, the umbrella organization of the nation’s internists.

Solante echoed the DOH call amid the emergence of three new variants of the deadly coronavirus disease 2019, otherwise known as “COVID-19.”

But Dr. Solante assured the people that they should not be alarmed because the three new COVID-19 variants “are just an ordinary uptick.”

According to the PCP president, the new COVID-19 variants do not mean that the infection will continue to spread as it did in 2020 or 2021.

Dr. Solante stressed the importance of not panicking, emphasizing that the focus should be on protecting themselves.

He said that COVID-19 is not the only disease that causes respiratory diseases, adding “there is pneumonia and influenza.”

“There are really a lot of microbes that we can get, especially in these times,” according to the health expert.
