NEW National Capital Region Police Office director Major General Edgar Alan O. Okubo yesterday called on all officers and men of the Metro Manila police force to support the ‘Buhay ay Ingatan, Droga ay Iwasan’ or BIDA program of Local Government Secretary Benjamin ‘Benhur’ C. Abalos Jr. as they stepped-up their effort to address illegal drug trafficking and abuse in the metropolis.

The new NCRPO director from Philippine National Police Academy ‘Tagapagtaguyod’ Class of 1992 issued the instruction to his as over 5,000 Metro Manila policemen joined the first-ever BIDA fun run initiated by the DILG on Sunday.

Sec. Abalos and Maj. Gen. Okubo led the fun run at the Mall of Asia grounds. It was also attended by thousands of other participants from various government agencies and units and saw the rollout of the ‘Serbisyo Caravan’ of the Marcos administration.

Ten government agencies offered free services to an estimated 20,000 people who joined the event. Around 16,000 runners from different sectors of society, over 5,000 of them from the NCRPO ran a three-kilometer distance to showcase their support to the government’s campaign against illegal drugs.

‘BIDA fun run’ and other sports activities are being considered to play a major role in the government’s endeavor to have a stronger community and a major element to encourage the youth sector to participate in productive endeavors as members of society instead of getting involved in illegal drug activities.

Among the services offered during the caravan were passport application, SIM card registration, driver’s license application and renewal, blood typing test, x-ray, mammogram, police clearance and many more.

“We are honored to be among the participants to this event geared to promote productive activities to encourage the youth and the community as a whole to take part in productive endeavors and keep away from vices especially illegal drugs,” said Maj. Gen. Okubo.
