GENERAL TRIAS CITY, Cavite – Hundreds of parishioners joined the “Salubong” or the celebration of the resurrection of Christ held at the St. Francis of Assisi Parish Church in this city yesterday.

“Salubong” is a Filipino tradition that dramatizes the reunion of Jesus and his grieving mother, Mary.

Rev. Fr. Oliver Genuino, parish priest of St. Francis of Assisi, led the Easter Sunday Mass that marks the end of the Holy Week for the Catholic faithful.

During yesterday’s celebration, local parishioners and devotees lifted the statues of the resurrected Christ and the mourning Mary and passed them in two different ways of processions.

The men, in a happy celebration of the procession, were accompanied by the statue of the resurrected Jesus.

Meanwhile, the women, who were in a sad and mournful procession, were accompanied by the mourning Mary wearing a black veil.

They arrived at the City Hall building in Plaza Rizal where a small woman dressed as an angel played by Grade 10 pupil Jaira Fiona Estelle L. Dimag from Bgy. Pinagtipunan removed the black veil from the statue of Mother Mary, indicating that the mourning is over.

The removal of the black veil was followed by the showering of flower petals and the singing of a Christian hymn.

A joyous procession took place with a Karakol theme to the historic church of San Francisco de Asis for the Easter Sunday mass.
