CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY 2nd District Representative Rufus Rodriguez on Wednesday joined his constituents and the people of Mindanao in mourning the death of former Cagayan de Oro City (CDO) Mayor Reuben Canoy.

“We grieve over the death of Mayor Canoy. We lost one of Mindanao’s great intellectuals and brilliant lawyers,” he said.

“He was a true advocate of federalism, together with the equally great sons of Cagayan de Oro and Mindanao – former Misamis Oriental Governor and Assemblyman Homobono Adaza and the late Senate President Aquilino Pimentel Jr. In fact, he once tried to separate Mindanao from the rest of the country,” he said.

Rodriguez said Canoy “is a true Mindanaonon who truly loved our Island of Mindanao and strongly advocated for the development of its vast potentials for the welfare of all Mindanaonons!”

He added that the former mayor “also served with utmost dedication and integrity as Regional Assemblyman for Region 10 and as Undersecretary of Public Information.”

Rodriguez said Mayor Canoy was also a media practitioner and belonged to a family who owned one of the biggest radio networks in the country, Radio Mindanao Network or RMN.

“Our prayers are with his family at this most difficult time,” he added.
