THE University Athletic Association of the Philippines will open Season 85 on October 1 with the hope of having a full calendar of sports disciplines.

The events calendar for the season, which begins with centerpiece men’s basketball, will be announced later this month.

“Our student-athletes have been waiting for their moment, some yet to return to the playing field since 2019,” said UAAP Season 85 president Fr. Aldrin Suan, CM of host Adamson.

In Season 84, there were only seven events played, namely men’s basketball, women’s volleyball, cheerdance, men’s and women’s 3×3, men’s beach volleyball, taekwondo poomsae and men’s and women’s chess. Except for cheerdance, all sports have bearing in the general championship which University of Santo Tomas eventually won.

University of the Philippines ended a 36-year men’s basketball championship drought, while National University captured the women’s volleyball crown after a 65-year wait.

Together with official television partner Cignal TV, the UAAP looks to inspire the country to “Rise as One” as the league holds its second season for the calendar year.

As the country’s college sports is getting have some sort of normalcy, the UAAP is also set to bring back the usual routine that were temporarily shelved last season due to pandemic restrictions.

“As we get back to normalcy, we will be going back to the ‘original’ days of the UAAP pre-pandemic which is holding our televised games on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. This season, we are also not just looking to have accomplished a ‘good hosting year’ for Adamson University but begin traditions that will be passed on from host to host for seasons to come,” said Suan.

There will be new innovations as well that Adamson hopes will be sustained for future seasons.

“After the last UAAP Season made us Fully Alive and created Champions for Life, UAAP Season 85 is hoping to call the entire community to Rise As One,” said Suan. “It’s been two years since the COVID-19 pandemic happened and has yet to end. Together, we are looking to rise as a nation, helping build a better future for a brighter tomorrow.”

“Together with Cignal, we are hoping and praying that we are allowed to have the full calendar back this season.”
