CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga — Three-term former Candaba mayor and two-time Pampanga Mayors League president Jerry Pelayo has expressed support to the proposal of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to build an impounding water facility in his town as a long-term solution to the ongoing flooding in Pampanga and Central Luzon.

In a recent interview with broadcaster Ira Panganiban, Pelayo said: “When I was mayor, I suggested in a regional development council meeting that a ring dike is needed to fill the rainwater. I am with the president on this matter. It can also be beneficial for aquaculture, irrigation for farmers, and tourism as well.”

Pelayo, known for his hands-on leadership during his tenure as Candaba mayor, firmly believes that the proposed water impounding project will not only alleviate the ongoing flooding but will also provide assistance to local industries and tourism.

The former mayor, however, expressed his disappointment with Congresswoman Ana York Bondoc’s reaction to the proposed solution.

“I am ashamed of the agitated behavior of Congresswoman Bondoc and it is obvious that she did not understand the suggestion of the national government. Dredging, as the congresswoman suggested, is just a temporary solution and very costly,” Pelayo said.

“Her behavior is provocative and very unbecoming of a hospitable Kapampangan,” Pelayo added.

Pelayo urged all stakeholders to consider the long-term benefits of the impounding water project over the temporary and costly measures.

He also called for unity and cooperation of local leaders to strictly monitor each local government unit’s solid waste management to prevent the dumping of waste in waterways, and effectively address the recurring issue of flooding in the region.

The former mayor’s endorsement of President Marcos Jr.’s plan emphasizes his commitment to practical and sustainable solutions to local problems, and his belief in the potential of Candaba and the greater Pampanga region.
