ANAKALUSUGAN party-list Rep. Mike Defensor on Friday vowed to stop illegal gambling activities, principally jueteng, in Quezon City.

Defensor made the dare a day after he and 2nd District Councilor Winnie Castelo filed their certificates of candidacy (COC) for city mayor and vice mayor, respectively.

Defensor lauded the renewed campaign of the Philippine National Police (PNP) to crack down on jueteng and other illegal numbers games in
Quezon City.

“Stopping unlawful gambling activities requires the unified effort of the police and the city government,” he said.

He said Quezon City is allegedly a rich source of illegal gambling revenues because it is the most populous local government unit in Metro Manila.

Defensor said the city has not allowed casino or legal gambling operations “because these will compete with illicit numbers games that are flourishing in the city.”

The PNP recently relieved a number of station and precinct commanders in the city for their alleged failure to stop illicit gambling in their areas.

Defensor said the PNP should sustain its renewed anti-illegal gambling campaign especially in the months leading to the May 2022 elections.

“At least, that will disrupt the operations of jueteng and other illegal gambling lords who are funding certain unscrupulous politicians,” he said.
