HERE’S good news to the bayang karerista.

The Philippine Racing Commission (PHILRACOM), headed by Chairman Reli de Leon, announces a blockbuster line-up of activities for the last quarter of the year.

Speaking at the 42nd “Sports on Air” via Zoom, De Leon said four major races and three juvenile series with more than P25 in guaranteed cash prizes await local horseracing fans before the year ends.

De Leon said the races are aimed at providing first-class entertainment to local horseracing fans and generating much-needed revenues for the country.

“Horseracing, the Sport of Kings, is alive and kicking after years of dealing with the pandemic,” said De Leon during the one-hour program with livestreaming on Facebook and YouTube.

The biggest — and the most prestigious — of these blue-ribbon races is the Presidential Gold Cup scheduled Dec. 18 at the Manila Jockey Club in Carmona, Cavite with whopping cash prizes of P10 million.

“We have invited no less than President Marcos to come and watch the event. He.and the First Lady, Liza Araneta- Marcos, are always very supportive to the horseracing industry,” said De Leon.

“In fact, it was his father, the late President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., who signed Presidential Decree No. 420 or the law creating the PHILRACOM on March 20, 1974,” recalled De Leon.

Also in the busy fourth-quarter schedule of the PHILRACOM are:

— Silver Cup on Oct 23 at the MMTCI in Malvar, Batangas with P4 million prize.

— Grand Derby on Nov. 6 at the new Hapi Racing Club in Carmona, Cavite with P3 million prize.

— Cojuangco Cup on Nov 20 at Malvar, Batangas with P3 million prize

— Juvenile Series races for two-year-old horses on Oct. 21, Dec. 4 and Dec. 24 with P1.8 million prizes per leg.

Last Oct. 14-16, the PHILRACOM also successfully hosted the first Philippine Horseracing and Breeding Expo at the MJCI in Carmona, Cavite.

De Leon also lauded the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), headed by Chairman Noli Eala, for providing support to the Horseracing and Breeding Expo and other PHILRACOM activities.

Eala and PSC Executive Director Atty. Guillermo Iroy visited De Leon in the PHILRACOM office in Makati recently to express their support.

Also providing assistance is the Games and Amusements Board (GAB), headed by Executive Director Atty. Ermar Benitez.
