TANZA, Cavite – The Cavite Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) led by Officer-in-Charge (OIC) Lorna Aviñante and Assistant Provincial Agriculturist Ana Pamela Nova, spearheaded the first “Onion Harvest Festival” at the techno-demo farm for onion production in Barangay Biga 1 here, Friday, March 17, 2023.

OPA team and other volunteers conducted a crop cut activity to gather data that will provide information on the growth and yield performance of the two onion varieties planted in the said area – the Chia Tai Red Thunder and the East West Super Pinoy.

The simple program was participated by the local farmers from Tanza and farmers’ organizations from nearby municipalities, and guests from the Department of Agriculture (DA) Region IV-A led by Engr. Redeliza Grueso, Regional HVCDP Focal Person; Domingo Austria, OIC-Tanza Municipal Agriculturist; Councilor Emilio Torres, Chairperson-Committee on Agriculture and Fisheries; and Felix Joselito H. Noceda, of the Agricultural Program Coordinating Office Cavite.

The techno-demo farm for onion production was a collaboration project among the farmer-cooperators, according to Edwin Ferrer, owner of the farm.

The Cavite Farmers’ Association, OPA, and private companies provided the seeds and fertilizer. CFA purchased the Red Thunder seeds from Chia Tai Corp., while the Super Pinoy Variety was purchased by Ferrer.

OPA also provided technical assistance and vermicast, while Gemini Agri-Farm Solutions Corp. company provided free foliar fertilizer. These private partner companies likewise provided technical assistance in monitoring the growth of the onions.

The other techno-demo farms for onion production in Cavite are located in the municipalities of Silang, General Mariano Alvarez, and Maragondon.
