POLICE have launched a manhunt for a jobless man who struck a sleeping carpenter with a hammer then stabbed him in the chest Tuesday in Malabon City.

Wilfredo Tumampil, 33, of C-4 Road Brgy. Tanong, was rushed by neighbors to the Tondo General Hospital where was placed under observation after he underwent medical treatment for stab wound in the chest.

Malabon police chief P/Col. Albert Barot said operatives of the Follow-Up Unit and Station Investigation and Detective Management Section (SIDMS) led by P/Maj. Ronald Carlos are still hunting the suspect identified as John Paul Santos, legal age and resident of 736 Rizal Avenue, Brgy. Tanong who immediately escaped after the incident.

Investigation conducted by P/SSgt. Jeric Tindugan showed that while Tumampil was sleeping inside his residence, the suspect, for still unknown reason, barged in at around 11 a.m. and repeatedly struck the victim’s body with a hammer.

The victim, who just woke up, tried to fight back but he was stabbed in the chest by Santos.

The commotion called the attention of the victim’s neighbors Velinda Espinosa, 24 and Lito Beltran, 39, which prompted the suspect to escape bringing with him the bladed weapon used in stabbing Tumampil.

Police said the motive behind the incident is yet to be determined since the victim is still unconscious.
